 The development of the shoe industry in Leon, Guanajuato can be traced back to the late 19th century when skilled shoemakers began setting up small workshops in the city. These artisans crafted shoes by hand, catering to the local population's footwear needs.

During this period, Leon was primarily an agricultural and livestock region. However, with the arrival of the railway system in the late 19th century, the city's economic landscape began to transform. The railway connected Leon to major cities and ports, enabling easier transportation of raw materials and finished products. 

 In the mid-20th century, Leon's shoe industry experienced a significant boom. Local manufacturers began adopting modern manufacturing techniques, incorporating advanced machinery and production processes. This leap forward propelled Leon into the spotlight as a major player in the global footwear market. The city's reputation for producing high-quality leather shoes grew, attracting both local and international buyers.

 
The Leather-Footwear sector has consolidated itself in Guanajuato as one of the promoters of development in the state. Out of the 165 million pairs of shoes produced nationwide in 2020, 132 million were produced in Guanajuato, which represents 80% of the national production. This means that 8 out of every 10 pairs of shoes produced in Mexico come from our state.

Manufacturers are embracing sustainable practices and exploring environmentally friendly materials, aligning with the growing global demand for eco-conscious products.
